FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

April 21 2011 - Leadership Class Explores Local Government Issues

Lafayette, LA - City-Parish government issues were the focus of activities for the Leadership Lafayette Class XXIV participants during the April session.  Highlights included an open dialogue presentation by City-Parish President Joey Durel and City-Parish Council members Kenneth Boudreaux and Mary Morrison, followed by a tour of and lunch at the Lafayette Parish Correctional Facility.

Participants also discussed their book club reading of Leadership and the One-Minute Manager: Increasing Effectiveness through Situational Leadership, by Ken Blanchard, Patricia Zigarmi &  Drea Zigarmi. Based on the One-Minute Manager, the class deliberated the book's message about forgoing the management philosophy of "treating everyone equally" and instead treating individuals individually.

"The sessions were an eye-opening experience for the class," said Leadership co-chair, Anne Laughlin.  "Feedback from the class was extremely positive and indicated that advocacy about local issues and public transportation quality was among the valuable lessons learned," agreed co-chair Anne Falgout.

Other guest presenters for the full-day session included Terry Huval, Tony Tramel, Mike Hollier and Bruce Conque.  The day required participants to use Lafayette's public transportation to access travel to some of the day's activities.  The class will experience state government issues during their upcoming visit with legislators at the state capital on May 11.

Leadership Lafayette is a program of the Leadership Institute of Acadiana and the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce.  Allison Dickerson, Leadership Lafayette Class XXIII graduate and Business and Marketing Representative for the Lafayette Utilities System, planned the day.
